Knacki Balls, you ask? Yes, I too was a bit surprised to find something so typically, oh I don’t know…American!...on the shelves of a Parisian supermarket. Actually the little Franprix around the corner from me can barely keep them in stock!
They are basically a container of Oscar Meyer mini hot dogs shaped like little balls, if you will. You microwave them for 2 minutes and voila! Serve them with a little Dijon mustard on the side for dipping and you have a great little aperitif snack…but make sure you serve them with alcohol! For some reason it minimizes the side effects...more on that below...
I first learned of these chaud chiens (hot dogs) when my roommates served them one evening when they had friends over for an aperitif. Granted after a few Cosmos most anything tastes good, even pressed meat parts, and we of course consumed them instantly.
One particularly broke weekend, my entire daily consumption consisted of a container of Knacki Balls. They’re great while you’re eating them but as soon your body synapses register this invasion of all things processed, you will quickly regret it. I was soon in bed in the fetal position clutching my stomach and bargaining with God (we know how well that works!) that I would never commit another a sin if he got me through the night. I of course didn't live up to my end of the bargain...
So the next time someone gives me attitude about how bad American food is and how badly Americans eat and how fat Americans are and how much better the food is in France and how much healthier the French eat and how French Women Don't Get Fat, I’ll have two words for them…. Knacki Balls!
Ugh, wiener balls!
I'm glad you have some ammo for the next bit of US-food-bashing. :)

If those are so American, how have I never seen them? I, alas, get migraines from nitrates and MSG, so I can only eat uncured hot dogs. :(
BTW, I did a big ole foodie post yesterday. Check it out if you haven't.
