This little baby strained (pun intended) my wallet for 26 euros! That’s over $30!!!!! For a strainer!!!!! Yikes! Thank you Brabantia! They are laughing all the way to Banque Populaire. But when I start a project I am usually so excited to get going to that I must get all the accoutrements THAT DAY or else I lose interest (can you say ADD?!).
I was making ice cream after all and I HAD to have something to strain my crème anglaise. I could have trekked back across town to BHV and no doubt purchased one for much less but as I have mentioned I am far too lazy and impatient for that. So I ran to the bricolage (a housewares store) across the street and succumbed to Our Lady of Over-Priced Housewares. I ran back upstairs and proceeded to make my ice cream. To perpetuate the MasterCard mantra...
One strainer, 26 euros. Making ice cream in your own ice cream maker, priceless!
I understand this dilemna completely. But you know what? A "chinois" is close to $100, so you might have made off easy.
What kind of ic did you make?

hi shuna! it kills me how expensive this stuff is! i saw a chinois here for something like 85 euros (about $100)! I don’t get that one? A little mesh shaped like a cone? I’m in the wrong business – forget cooking, i’m making overpriced culinary tools!!!
i made the standard vanilla crème anglaise base then in one batch i added chopped figs and in another i added basil! with the basil, i did a blind taste test of sorts on some friends last night. They could obviously see the little green specs in the ice cream but i didn’t tell them what it was. it took a while but finally one person got it. i love doing things that make people really think about the flavors. I made a parsnip soup once and everyone was expecting a cauliflower type taste and then you see the quizzical looks on their face.
