Death by Chocolate indeed! I don’t know about you, but I can’t think of a better way to go. Two movies I've seen at least 100 times and could watch another 100 times are Like Water for Chocolate and Chocolat, so is it any wonder than when I heard author Leonard Pitt, founder of the Berkeley Chocolate Club, was coming to town, I jumped up, hand in the air à la Arnold Horshack (ok, I am *really* dating myself here!), requesting a spot on his coveted chocolate tour?!
Cindy and I along with 3 women from Ohio followed Leonard in a sugar-coma-like trance from one delightful chocolate shop to the next. Along the way he attempted to educate us with Parisian history of the covered walkways or arcades, the first conceived at the Palais Royal, home to courtesans and counts and caught on like the proverbial wildfire. But we were only thinking of one thing…..chocolate!
Author David Lebovitz, former pastry chef at Chez Panisse and a fellow Bay Area expat in Paris, offers his take on the best chocolatier in Paris as well as some other notables. When he's not writing books or exploring hidden corners of Paris, David guides amazing chocolate tours and is a guest pastry chef at Susan Hermann Loomis' On Rue Tatin.
